| Frequently
Asked Questions (FAQ)
| Is it painful ?
Not in the least. The perfect control of local anaesthetics enables us to treat an entire mouth in one session of tooth preparation. At the end of the session a simple analgesic will eliminate any post-operative discomfort.
| Is it essential to devitalize the teeth ?
Certainly not. In most cases, with the exception of very damaged teeth, we keep teeth alive, which ensures that the gum remains natural and without retraction, while guaranteeing a virtually indefinite useful life for the reconstituted tooth.
| What is the difference between facings and jackets ?
A facing covers the visible part of the tooth after some minor preparation, and is glued on it. A jacket covers both the external and internal part, like a crown, but without the use of metal. It is intended for teeth that have already been treated with composite fillings and cannot be reconstituted with a facing. (see techniques part: jackets))
| Is the edge seen as a dark line around the neck of the tooth ?
Not at all, because we no longer use underlying metal structures, and the gum of a living tooth adapts perfectly to ceramic, whose properties are absolutely identical to those of human enamel. ( see techniques part: facets)
| Is special care needed ?
Not at all. You will be able to clean your mouth and new teeth exactly like natural teeth.
| What is the difference between an implant and a post ?
An implant replaces an extracted tooth when there is no longer a root. It is an artificial root. A post, or a posted tooth, is introduced into the remains of a devitalized tooth and is the mounting for a crown or a jacket.
| When should an implant be fitted ?
When the extracted tooth or teeth do not allow a bridge to be fitted, or when we do not wish to put pressure on healthy teeth. An implant is an artificial root integrated into the bone, which will consolidate during 2 to 6 months, depending on circumstances.
| Is it painful to fit an implant ?
Not at all. Properly managed local anesthesia and correctly administered analgesics prevent pain completely.
| When should a pivot be fitted ?
When a tooth has been devitalized and the volume of the remaining natural crown is insufficient. The sealed pivot, also called an "inlay-core", replaces the missing volume.
| Is it possible to re-align teeth simply with facings
The answer is yes, if the alignment defect is not too great. Each case will require a prior examination to provide a firm answer to this type of request. ( see techniques part : facets)
| How are the shade and colour chosen ?
The different shades and colours are analysed according to the patient's type of skin, and eye and hair colour. As patients sometimes insist on having very white teeth, we prepare temporary teeth accordingly, which allows the patient to appreciate the final result. If this is acceptable, we prepare the final teeth in line with that request. We can also modify this choice if necessary.
| Is it possible to keep a natural smile ?
This is what we strongly advise in most cases, and we obtain this perfectly. If the demand is for an "Extra White smile", we respect that, and as in other cases we use the temporary teeth as a test.
| Do the teeth have to be ground ?
In the case of facings we reduce the external face by a few tenths of a millimetre to ensure a perfect fit for the facing to be glued to the tooth. In some cases this is unnecessary if we wish to increase the tooth's external volume.
| Does it damage the enamel ?
Human enamel is 98% mineral, and the facing is 100% mineral, glued to the tooth enamel with carefully selected and durable products, obviously intended primarily to preserve the tooth.
| How long does it last ?
With regular checks, the useful life of facings is between 10 and 20 years, or more. It depends on maintenance and regular controls. Jackets last over 20 years.
| How long does the treatment take ?
If no implants are required, the complete treatment is spread over a week. In some cases, even with implants fitted, the treatment can be completed in the same time. For other cases with implants, it will sometimes be necessary to envisage treatment in two week-long periods, 8 to 16 weeks apart, depending on healing.
| Do smoking, coffee or tea alter the shade ?
Jackets and facings are made from ceramic baked at 1200°C. So it is in fact glass, which can change its shade after 1,000 years! This does not alter the fact that it is preferable to avoid smoking, for health reasons.
| Is it possible to bite a sandwich or an apple ?
Without any problem at all. The comfort is absolutely identical to that of your teeth.
| How long does it take to regain the sensation of real teeth ?
A few hours, or a few days at the most.
